Letter from the President
It has been an honor to serve as the AAVMC president
during the year July 2007-June 2008. this is an exciting
time for academic veterinary medicine — particularly
in an era of increasing globalization, and growing
recognition and appreciation by the public, the health
professions, and the scientific community at large, of
the roles and responsibilities that veterinarians play
in the protection of animal health, the relief of animal
suffering, the conservation of animal resources, the
promotion of public health, and the advancement of
medical knowledge. on behalf of the entire Association,
I wish to thank Dr. lawrence Heider, executive
Director from 2002-2007, for his leadership, dedication
and commitment to AAVMC these past years. under
his steady guidance, the organization grew in membership,
revenue, and budget. AAMVC became recognized
throughout the world as a leader of excellence in
academic veterinary medicine. We wish Dr. Heider
great happiness and success on his retirement and in
the next phase of his life!
I was honored to serve with the entire AAVMC Board of
Directors and, following on the heels of Dr.
lance
perryman, moving on several important initiatives
in collaboration with our membership at large.
First, building on the success of the publication of
The Foresight Report: Envisioning the Future of Veterinary
Medicine, it was my privilege to lead the Board
of Directors and our organization in launching the
development of our organization's first comprehensive
strategic plan. over the years, AAVMC has made
substantive contributions to academic veterinary
medicine in a number of important areas, but with the
development of our strategic plan, we will be positioned
to focus our attention, energies, and resources
toward achieving shared goals and objectives across
our member institutions and in collaboration with our
partners and other stakeholders.
During the year, we also established AAVMC's
first finance and governmental affairs committees.
the Finance Committee, led by our AAVMC treasurer,
is already proposing and overseeing financial
policies that will promote controlled growth of AAVMC
and the undertaking of important and new initiatives
while growing, managing, and protecting our financial
reserves. the Governmental Affairs Committee is
providing increased member participation in the
development and oversight of an AAVMC governmental
affairs agenda, including initiatives that will come
before both the legislative and executive branches of
the federal government.
During the year, we also saw AAVMC grow with the
following international colleges of veterinary medicine
joining AAVMC: from Australia — Murdoch university,
the university of Sydney, and the university of
Melbourne; and from Ireland — the university of
Dublin. We also saw our first affiliate college of
veterinary medicine — Ross university — join our
ranks. We are proud and pleased to have these new
members as they bring their special, unique, and
global perspectives to AAVMC and academic veterinary
medicine. It also was a pleasure to work with the office
International epizooties (World organization for Animal
Health) in providing the opportunity for many of our
deans to travel to oIe headquarters to learn about the
roles and responsibilities of veterinarians in protecting
livestock and human health in allowing their international
trade.
I look forward to working with the association as it
continues its essential work on advancing academic
veterinary medicine.
Sincerely,
Dr. Timothy
Boosinger,

AAVMC during the year July 2007-June 2008, had
several substantive accomplishments and also
oversaw several changes in leadership. this report
highlights the work of AAVMC's committed and
talented staff leading to significant accomplishments
during the year. Dr. lawrence Heider, who served
AAVMC as executive Director during 2002-2007,
oversaw, in collaboration with several AAVMC leaders,
the conduct and report on "the Foresight Report:
envisioning the Future of Veterinary Medical education"1,
which captured the attention and imagination
of the veterinary medical profession at large, and
which underscored the changes that will be needed in
academic veterinary medical education to continue to
meet societal needs.
I was honored to take up the mantle of executive Director
upon Dr. Heider's retirement on november 1st,
2007. A first priority was to launch the development of
a strategic plan for AAVMC. under the leadership of
newly appointed AAVMC Deputy Director, Dr. Michael
Chaddock, and with generous support from Bayer
Animal Health, an AAVMC Strategic planning Steering
Committee was formed and convened, and several
activities aimed at collecting input from our members,
partners, and stakeholders for the plan were initiated.
Completion of AAVMC's strategic plan is anticipated for
January 2009.
An important program of AAVMC has been one of
advocating for federal and other resources for its
member institutions to be able to increase veterinary
class sizes, and to grow programs of research. After
several years of dedicated, strategic networking by our
AAVMC member institutions, the Sub-Committee on
Health, of the House Committee on energy and Commerce,
held a congressional hearing on the Veterinary
public Health Workforce expansion Act, January 23,
2008. Dr. Sheila Allen, Dean of the College of Veterinary
Medicine at the university of Georgia, Dr. Alan Kelley,
Dean emeritus at the College of Veterinary Medicine,
university of pennsylvania, and I, joined by Dr. Ron
DeHaven, executive Vice president and Chief executive
officer of the American Veterinary Medical Association,
testified on the roles of veterinarians in protecting food
safety and public health, and on the need for added
resources to ensure that academic veterinary medicine
is positioned to produce sufficient graduates to go into
these fields in the future.
AAVMC's Journal of Veterinary Medical education
(JVMe) serves as the nation's pre-eminent journal
on veterinary medical education. Beginning in late
December 2007, Dr. Henry Baker, Director emeritus
of the Scott-Ritchey Research Center, College of
Veterinary Medicine, Auburn university took the helm
as JVMe's senior editor. We are already benefiting
from the new insights and perspectives that Dr. Baker
brings to the Journal along with the dynamic, talented
members of the editorial Board. Another change
that occurred during the year was the transition of
Dr. Andrew Maccabe, who moved from our AAVMC
ranks, to become a full fledged government employee
with the uS Centers for Disease Control and prevention
(CDC) as the CDC liaison to the Food and Drug
Administration.
March 13-18, 2008, AAVMC held another highly successful
annual meeting, appropriately devoted in the
plenary sessions and committee meetings to "Strategic
Directions". the meeting included a successful
symposium on educational Symposium on "Assessing
Clinical Competency: Our Professional Responsibility",
a department chairs and heads program on "What
Constitutes A High-Quality Department?", and three full
days of networking and work by AAVMC's committees.
AAVMC was proud to recognize Dr.
leon Russell,
College of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences, texas
A&M university, as the winner of the Senator John
Melcher, DVM, leadership in public policy Award, and
Dr. Kathleen Salisbury, College of Veterinary Medicine,
purdue university, as the winner of the national
norden-pfizer Distinguished teaching Award. Dr. J. t.
Vaughn presented the AAVMC Recognition lecture.
April 2-4, 2008, AAVMC hosted a north American
Deans' "AAVMC-oIe Workshop on Globalization of
Veterinary Medicine and International trade" at the
headquarters of the World organization for Animal
Health (office International epizooties) in paris,
France. participants were presented with an overview
of international trade, and the importance of graduating
veterinarians with the knowledge and skills needed
to certify the health of livestock and poultry and therefore,
to facilitate international trade in compliance with
uS and international regulations.
I have highlighted just some of the incredible achievements
by AAVMC this past year. We wish Drs. Heider
and Maccabe best wishes in their next phases of
career and life, and thank all of our members and
member institutions who have made substantial
contributions to AAVMC every day. I am grateful to our
AAVMC staff who provide unwavering commitment
and support to achieving AAVMC's mission, and I look
forward to working with AAVMC's members, staff,
partners, and stakeholders to advance excellence in
academic veterinary medicine in the years ahead.
